Thieves have stolen 21,327 euros of cash from the offices of the Tesoro cave in Rincón de la Victoria. The robbery took place in the early hours of last Friday morning and was reported to police when staff discovered the bars protecting a window had been forced, the alarm deactivated and the money missing.
A security guard, employed by Rincón de la Victoria town hall, is reported to have gone to the cave when the alarm went off, but when he allegedly saw nothing suspicious and didn't notice the open window, he left the area. Police have opened an investigation into the robbery, which doesn't rule out involvement by members of staff.
Work started immediately on Friday morning to improve security at the cave, which has been in the news recently due to a record number of visitors over the summer months and changes to its timetable.
The robbery follows two very similar incidents at the Nerja caves this year.
