To create a unique garden which is completely sustainable is the objective of Alhaurín de la Torre town hall. The project will be the first xerogarden in the area and will be created in the Ermita del Cerro park.
The practise of xeriscaping and the xerogarden was first devised in the 80s and is a concept that uses only native species, which require a minimum amount of water ('xero' means 'dry' in Greek), to create a garden.
Work on the garden will begin towards the end of this month.
"This type of garden has many advantages because it respects native Mediterranean species which are easy to maintain and therefore saves money," explained councillor Prudence J. Ruiz. The planting will mainly consist of succulents and grasses and other species adapted to the climate.
