The new indoor swimming pool in La Cala de Mijas moved one step closer to reality this week as the town hall awarded the contract for its construction to Joca Ingeniería y Construcciones.
The project has a budget of 3.5 million euros and will take 17 months to complete. It will allow for the creation of a heated Olympic-size swimming pool in one of the most accessible areas of the province, part of a town hall plan to relieve the stress on the existing facilities in the area.
According to mayor Josele González, with this new indoor pool, Mijas "will take a massive leap forward in terms of sporting infrastructure". He also stressed that the people of La Cala would no longer have to travel to Las Lagunas to practise watersports.
The new pool will be located on a 17,600-square-metre plot of land where the current football pitch and multisport complex is located in La Cala. There will be new parking spaces, a reception area, a first-aid station, a meeting room and men's, women's and mixed changing areas.
As for the pool itself, its temperature will be maintained at between 24 and 30 degrees Celsius and there will be a stand large enough to welcome 450 specatators.
