Malaga city council has agreed to give extra planning protection to historic caves in the Churriana area, near the airport, that are under threat from housing developments.

The caves in the Gamera Baja-Tosca area were used as dwellings and places of worship by Christians while much of the Iberian peninsula was under Muslim rule from the eighth century.

The town hall will give the site listed status in the PGOU master town plan after pressure from local groups. It is hoped to open an interpretation centre there.
