Scaffolding has gone up on the much-photographed parish church in the heart of Marbella's old town. The north aisle facing the square alongside the Iglesia de la Encarnación needs urgent repairs after an annual check-up revealed leaks and parts that needed patching up.
The church dates from the seventeenth century and work on its restoration has had to be carried out in a piecemeal fashion as funds allow. A few years ago the roof of the central nave was repaired and then the upper domes.
Now repair workers are racing to renovate the next part before autumn rains. The budget for the work is 105,000 euros. It will be two more years before the aisle on the south side can be looked at.
