  • Acting prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, attributes the death to gender violence.

The Guardia Civil are investigating what appears to be a murder-suicide in the village of Estación de Gaucín in the municipality of Cortes de la Frontera near Ronda on Wednesday.

The bodies of 67-year-old Juan and 47-year-old Elena, who had been married for less than a year, were discovered in the village, after gunshots had been reported at around 1.30pm.

It appears that the man, a retired member of the military, killed his wife, shooting her with a rifle while she was on the terrace of a relative's house with three other people. He then apparently killed himself using the same weapon in the street just metres from the house.

It appears that the couple were about to leave for San Pedro Alcántara to visit Elena's children from a previous relationship.

Acting prime minister Pedro Sánchez regretted the news of another victim of gender violence, which, he tweeted, "isn't stopping and outrages us as a society".
