The head of the Judicial Police branch of the Guardia Civil in Algeciras, Cadiz province, has been arrested for his alleged links to drug trafficking in the Campo de Gibraltar area, according to the Asociación Unificada de Guardias Civiles (AUGC).

This top Guardia Civil officer, according to Seville-based ABC, had been stationed in the Cadiz town of Tarifa for some time. He currently lives in Tarifa but carried out much of his professional activity at the Guardia's headquarters in Algeciras.

According to sources close to the investigation, the officer, whose initials are F. J., and his alleged illegal activities had been arousing suspicion for some time. He was arrested on Wednesday and refused bail, pending a judicial inquiry.

The captain of the Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil in Algeciras is being investigated for disclosure of secrets, prevarication and membership of an organised gang.

The AUGC said in a statement that it felt "deep concern over a situation that, if proven, would provide further evidence of the tentacles of drug trafficking reaching into high levels of government and public service in Cadiz province."
