Local councils around Spain were officially established on Saturday with new mayors being elected and councillors sworn-in. This week the new and re-elected council leaders have started naming the councillors on their close government team who will head the various town hall departments.
PP majorities
In Marbella, Estepona, Fuengirola, Benahavís, both Alhauríns, Coín and Antequera there were no surprises on Saturday as the candidates for mayor, all PP, had won an overall majority in the 26 May election.
Marbella mayor Ángeles Muñoz's local government team includes some new faces. Among them is Remedios Bocanegra, who will take over at the helm of the Foreign Residents department, which has been separated from Tourism.
PP pacts
In the city of Malaga a last-minute pact between the PP and Ciudadanos allowed veteran mayor Francisco de la Torre to keep his job for a fifth term of office. This week he named his ten deputies, among them the Ciudadanos spokesperson, and district councillors.
In Nerja, the former PP mayor José Alberto Armijo is back in the office he held for 20 years before Socialist mayor Rosa Arrabal took over in 2015. He gained the majority he needed with the help of the Vox councillor.
Rincón de la Victoria's mayor Francisco Salado (PP) was re-elected thanks to votes from three groups, Por Mi Pueblo, Ciudadanos and Vox. He is also the president of the provincial authority, the Diputación.
Socialists
Three of the province's large towns have a Socialist PSOE mayor after last Saturday: Benalmádena, Torremolinos and Vélez-Málaga.
In Benalmádena Víctor Navas gets another term in office as mayor after receiving the votes of the two Izquierda Unida councillors, who join the local government team in coalition. On Wednesday Navas announced his heads of departments. The mayor has kept three areas to run personally, Foreign Residents, Equality and Diversity, and Tourism. Three new departments have been created, among them 'Urbanisations' and Development of Benalmádena Costa.
In Vélez-Málaga, the PSOE's Antonio Moreno Ferrer was re-elected with the support of councillors from the Torre del Mar party GIPMTM.
Delays
Mijas is still without a mayor after the ceremony was postponed until 5 July. The delay, due to a dispute between two Vox candidates as to which of them should occupy their one seat, has drawn out the uncertainty over who will be mayor. Here the obvious PP-Cs partnership is hampered by the long-term animosity between the two leaders.
In Riogordo the new mayor has not yet been sworn-in as an appeal is being heard.
