Members and supporters of Age Concern Fuengirola/Mijas are preparing for this year's hair-raising charity challenge. Since its inauguration in 2014, the local charity has organised two daring collective fundraising events, one of which was a skydive. Last year's challenge was a cross-border zip-wire from Spain to Portugal, which raised over 5,000 euros.
This year, a group of daredevil senior citizens will abseil down the side of the Sunset Beach Hotel in Benalmádena Costa. Age Concern has enlisted Estepona-based TUUR, specialists in adventure activities, to oversee the safety of challenge.
The participants will literally step off the roof of the four-star hotel and abseil with the same technique used by climbers to descend hazardous mountain terrain.
The charity has so far received the backing of Specsavers and Avalon, as well as the Sunset Beach Hotel. Representatives from the companies have promised to participate in the challenge, but the charity is appealing for more people to take part in order to beat the total raised at last year's challenge. The event has also received approval from Benalmádena town hall, which has also pledged its support.
Secretary, Steve Marshall said, "We are doing another daring fundraiser to demonstrate that life does not end at 50. This year's challenge is much more demanding than the last, so we have taken the necessary steps to ensure everyone's safety."
