This is no ordinary eviction. On Monday, the local ports authority ordered the ex-wife of the lighthouse keeper at the El Faro lighthouse, on Mijas Costa, to leave the home in which she lives, next to the tower itself.

An official announcement was published for the woman to leave El Faro de Calaburras lighthouse, as it is officially known, within two months and find somewhere else to live.

The story goes back to October last year when the lighthouse keeper and his wife divorced, according to port sources. The man who was in charge of this iconic lighthouse, by the A-7 road between La Cala de Mijas and Fuengirola, handed in his resignation and left.

His now ex-wife, however, stayed in the couple's home, which is a house with a small garden next to the lighthouse tower.

This created an immediate headache for port officials, as only public employees working at the facility had a right to live there. The order for the eviction was signed on 10 June by Carlos Rubio, head of the port authority in Malaga.

However the story may not end there. By law, the occupant has a right of appeal to the port authority and, if that fails, then to go to the courts.
