During a visit to Malaga last weekend the German ambassador to Spain, Wolfgang Dold, laid a wreath at the English cemetery as a tribute to the victims of the shipwrecked vessel, the Gneisenau. The ship sank off the coast of Malaga in 1900 and numerous sailors were killed while others were rescued and taken in by local people.

With the visit coinciding with the European elections, the ambassador spoke of the solidarity between Spain and Germany and the importance of close European relationships in ensuring a peaceful future on the continent.

Dold also attended an event on the German Navy corvette 'Ludwigshafen am Rhein' that was docked in Malaga before beginning a Unifil mission off the Lebanese coastline.
