Workers cleaning up the area around Bentomiz castle, near the village of Arenas, have unearthed what they believe to be an axe dating back to prehistoric times.

"It is clearly a domestic item dating from the early Bronze Age," the town hall announced in a press release last Friday.

The cleanup project started at the beginning of May with a view to providing better visitor access and signposts to the sixth-century castle, which has been largely abandoned since the end of Spain's Islamic era.

The town hall said that work is being undertaken under strict archaeological supervision.
