The mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, has encouraged foreign residents in the town to exercise their right to vote in the council elections on 26 May. At a meeting held with residents' associations in Las Chapas on Wednesday, Muñoz, who is again the Partido Popular's candidate for mayor, explained that only just over ten per cent of the more than 40,000 foreign residents registered in the town had expressed their intention to vote before the deadline at the end of January. This figure - 4,258 - is still double the registered foreign voters four years ago, Muñoz pointed out.
Now it is important, said the mayor, for the residents who have registered to vote to turn out on ballot day. "We want people to get involved; if they live here, pay their taxes here and have the chance to decide, let them decide," stressed the mayor, pointing out that in the last elections only 20 per cent of the foreigners who had registered to vote actually went to their local polling station on the day.
