  • More than 200 businesses spread across 19 streets including iconic Calle San Miguel and La Nogalera can now apply for extra grants

The central shopping area of Torremolinos has been officially designated a 'centro comercial abierto' (open-air shopping centre). The title, approved by the Junta regional government, means firms in the heart of the resort can apply for special grants to stimulate trade and investment and operate under a unifying brand to attract more shoppers.

The scheme is called Torremolinos Abierto and has been driven by the local shopkeepers and traders association, ACET. President of the group, Juan Vallejo, explained that the area has been steadily improving its facilities in recent years.

"It's been 19 years of dedication during which time ACET has been 'collecting points' to reach this distinction," he said.

Mayor José Ortiz said it was "a fundamental step" in the regeneration of the town.
