Único de Mondrón olive oil has been awarded a gold medal at the Athena International Olive Oil Competition, which took place in Greece, from 18 to 20 March.
This is the third time in a year that the oil, which was only launched in March last year, has been awarded top prizes in major international olive oil competitions.
In April 2018, it won a prize at the World Olive Oil Competition in New York and just three months later, in June last year, it picked up another gold medal at the International Mediterranean Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition in Jerusalem.
"We are very happy right now as this recognises all the hard work done by all of our members. Único is a great product and the award values what we are able to do at a small olive mill," said manager, Francisco Alcántara, on picking up the award.
Organic olive oil
In January this year the company, based in the small hamlet of Mondrón, which belongs to Periana in the Axarquía, launched its first organic olive oil, using only olives picked at the beginning of the season, in early November, from the mountains in the local area.
