  • Five hundred volunteers representing 27 nationalities collected 40,000 cigarette butts and almost a tonne of rubbish last Saturday

Twenty-seven nationalities took part in a clean-up operation on Almuñécar's and La Herradura's beaches last Saturday.

Forty thousand cigarette butts and almost a tonne of plastic and other rubbish were collected by more than 500 volunteers throughout the day.

This was one of a number of similar activities the organisation Playa Patrol has planned this year.

The next will take place on 13 April on Cantarriján beach and two more are scheduled for 30 June and 22 September, which is International Coastal Cleanup Day.
