El Trapiche-based fruit giant, Trops, sent its first ever shipment of avocados to the USA last week. A boat carrying a container of the subtropical fruit set sail on 1 March and is expected to arrive in New York on the 10th, where the avocados will be distributed among supermarkets in the city.
Trops first had talks with agencies in the United States as far back as 1998 to try to access the market, but it wasn't until 2015 when representatives from the US Animal and Plant Health Service (APHIS) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) visited Trops' headquarters in the Axarquía, along with Spanish government representatives, to inspect the company's premises and protocols.
"This shows the maturity of Trops as a collective of producers," said Enrique Colilles, manager of Trops, last Friday.
Trops is a collective of 2,800 farmers from Andalucía, Valencia, Alicante and the Algarve in Portugal and its principal produce are mangoes and avocados.
