The first phase of the new video surveillance project in Marbella will be in operation before the start of the summer, town hall spokesman Félez Romero has confirmed.
The cameras have already been installed, he said, but what remains to be done is to connect the network to the Local Police and National Police headquarters, as well as to the branch of the dedicated foreign-tourist help service of the National Police, known as SATE .
A total of 85 new CCTV cameras have been installed in Elviria, the Puerto Deportivo, La Cañada and Puerto Banús at a cost of 1.046 million euros.
"It will be a much safer summer for Marbella," said Romero who also expressed the possibility of it being ready in time for the Holy Week celebrations, which this year arrives later than usual, in the third week of April.
The second phase of the project will cover the area of the historic centre and the contract for a consultancy firm for its design will soon be put out to tender.
