SUR recognises Malaga's brightest and best

More than a thousand people packed into the Palacio de Congresos y Ferias in Malaga on Tuesday for the 19th edition of the SUR Malagueños del Año awards.

The event, organised by SUR with the collaboration of Unicaja Banco, recognised the achievements of some of the province's own, whether individuals, organisations or businesses.

For the Sports prize, the first to go up to the podium was Unicaja basketball player Alberto Díaz who at 24 is already one of the mainstays in the national team. Díaz was followed onto the stage by Dr César Ramírez, winner in Society category. He received the award in recognition of his career as a surgeon, as well as his charitable work in heading up expeditions to various developing countries where he has helped more than a 1,000 patients.

In the Economy and Business section, local supermarket chain Maskom, which grew out of a small deli counter in Malaga and now directly employs 720 people, won the award and the trophy was picked up by Sergio Cuberos, its founder.

The Muelle Uno leisure and shopping area won the Tourism prize for its role in the transformation of the city's port area. President Miguel Rodríguez Porras collected the trophy.

The final winner was singer Vanesa Martín, currently one of the most popular singers and songwriters Spanish-speaking world. Despite a busy tour schedule, Martín said that she always relishes returning to her home town as it is "open, cosmopolitan, at the forefront of culture, warm and welcoming".

Guests, who included leading figures in Malaga's political, business and social circles, as well as Malaga CF president Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani, were welcomed to the event by SUR editor-in-chief Manuel Castillo, who in turn introduced the prizewinners.

Provincial government head Elías Bendodo and central government delegate for Malaga, María Gámez also spoke, before a closing speech by city mayor Francisco de la Torre. He passed on his best wishes to the PP candidate to lead the Junta regional government, Juanma Moreno, also among the audience, whom he described as the "Malagueño of the week".
