Residents in a rural area of Alhaurín el Grande have complained to the town hall after learning of the plans of local firm Moreno y Plaza SA to build a new packaging plant for meat products near their homes.
The firm, located on La Rosa industrial estate, maintains that the new 6,000-square-metre plant would be environmentally friendly, with solar panels and a state-of-the-art water treatment system, and create 100 jobs. The plans are still only on paper and pending an environmental impact study by the Junta de Andalucía.
The local residents, in an area where there are numerous "irregular" developments and other industrial warehouses, fear the bad smells that the plant could generate as well as showing concerns for its environmental impact. They also complain that information about the plans was only sent to two out of 50 properties they consider to be affected, which is why their did not submit their objections during the statutory period in August.
A meeting with the mayor, Toñi Ledesma, to explain the project did not stop the residents from handing in an official complaint, signed by 60 people.
Moreno y Plaza has said that as the project is still on paper it hasn't ruled out taking the new plant elsewhere.
