Works to expand the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella could resume next year, admitted the Junta de Andalucía's Malaga delegate, José Luis Ruiz Espejo, on a visit to Marbella on Wednesday.

He said that the current disputed contract could be terminated in a matter of weeks, allowing the completion of the works, stalled since 2010, to be put out to tender once more.

The Junta delegate, however, refused to be drawn on specific dates for the start of works but said that he hoped that a number of the projects could be put out to tender throughout 2019.

In the meantime, Ruiz Espejo wanted to stress that the Junta, responsible for the public health service in Andalucía, was still investing in the hospital while the works were stalled and was making improvements "regularly", such as the creation of a new haemodynamics room, at the cost of 1.3 million euros.

He also pointed out that the hospital was rated best in Spain last year.
