Shop owners in Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar oppose El Ingenio plans

  • Representatives for independent shops said that the extension would damage trade in both town centres

Local business organisations in Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar have overwhelmingly opposed plans to extend the El Ingenio shopping centre, situated between the two towns.

Both ACET and ACEV, which represent independent shops in Torre del Mar and Vélez-Málaga respectively, spoke out after plans by current owners of the centre, Sociedad Azucarera Larios S. A. (SALSA), to increase El Ingenio by 5,000 square metres, faced a controversial vote at a council meeting earlier this week.

The current coalition in control at the town hall voted in favour of the plans, while opposition parties either voted against or abstained.

ACET and ACEV representatives said that the extension would damage trade in both town centres, where there are plans to pedestrianise more streets to encourage trade.
