Vélez-Málaga town hall has announced that the first stage of work to pedestrianise the town centre has been awarded to Soluciones Integrales de Ingeniería y Obras, S. L., for 111,860 euros.
This is the first stage of four to complete the project and will involve building a roundabout and redirecting traffic around the Camino Viejo de Málaga road and Avenida de la Hispanidad.
However, not everyone is happy with this news. Business owners in the town centre, though not opposed to the pedestrianisation, have called for the local council to prioritise the lack of parking in the area first.
Presidente of ACEV, Fernando Lisbona, said that the situation is the "same as 20 years ago" and that without more parking spaces the pedestrianisation will not have the desired effect and that the town will be "deserted" after three o'clock when the banks and public buildings close.
