A new campaign to promote the Costa del Sol's traditional beach restaurants, known as chriringuitos, kicks off with the celebration of the 1st Chiringuito Day on Wednesday 27 June.
The initiative was announced on Monday by the president of the Association of Beach Business Owners, Manuel Villafaina, and the head of the provincial government's tourism company Turismo Costa del Sol, Jacobo Florido.
The aim is to promote the traditional chiringuito as an attraction that brings traditional fish dishes to locals and tourists and sets the Costa del Sol apart from other destinations.
To celebrate this first Chiringuito Day Villafaina announced that festivities will be organised on various beaches in Fuengirola, Mijas, Benalmádena, Malaga and Marbella on Wednesday.
He gave away few details, except to say that the aim was to "surprise tourists" and that the celebration would become an annual event.
Florido stressed the importance of local cuisine in tourists' choice of holiday destination. "26% say that the cuisine offered by local restaurants was the main reason for choosing a destination. The authorities have to keep backing the [restaurant] industry," he added.
