New, minimalist street lights will replace the current art nouveau style on the Alameda Principal in the city of Malaga, as part of ongoing renovation works.

This revelation has proven controversial, as many local residents and business owners are fiercely critical of the new design. The president of the association for neighbours of Malaga's historic centre has denounced the change, saying it is not necessary and that the current street lights, which have been installed for 27 years, are part of the city's heritage. María José Valenzuela, representative of local business owners, echoes his statement, declaring her association completely against the change.

For his part, mayor Francisco de la Torre was surprised by the rejections of the lights. He responded with the statement: We are setting up an Alameda for the 21st century and some things have to change.
