Councillors from Vélez-Málaga town hall met with representatives from the regional government, the Junta de Andalucía, on Monday to discuss the demolition of the Casillas de la Vía slum area to the west of Torre del Mar, where around 40 families live.

The main objective of the meeting was to work out where to rehouse those residents as well as people from other deprived neigbourhoods in Vélez-Málaga.

The Junta de Andalucía has promised 1.5 million euros to the town hall, but clarified during the meeting that the money must not be used to demolish the slums, but to rehome residents and help with associated social problems, which include drug use and school attendance.

Councillor for Torre del Mar, Jesús Atencia, said, “Delaying the demolition is a public health risk.”
