Almáchar's Socialist councillor, Antonio Yuste, is to propose that 19 April be considered by the United Nations as International Day of the Malaga-Muscatel Raisin, following the decision by the UN's Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) to include it on its list of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS).
Yuste's motion will be debated at the next council meeting and if passed will go to the national government for consideration. If the national government gives the proposal the go ahead it will be sent to the United Nations, with details as to why the applicants consider the Axarquía raisin to be important enough to have its own international day.
April 19 has been chosen by Yuste as it was on that day this year that the official certificate was presented to representatives from the regional government, the Junta de Andalucía and mayors from the Axarquía at a ceremony at the FAO's headquarters in Rome.
The Almáchar councillor's proposal includes the annual celebration on 19 April every year as well as year-round activities to “raise awareness” of the importance of the local product which has been produced in the same, organic way, by many generations of people in the area.
