Following a visit by German Archaeologist, Hermanfrid Schbuart, and his wife to Torre de Mar last Saturday, deputy mayor for Torre del Mar, Jesús Pérez Atencia, has formerly proposed that a street in the town be named in his honour.
The written request was sent to Antonio Moreno Ferrer, mayor of Vélez-Málaga, to which Torre del Mar belongs administratively, on Tuesday.
In the request, Atencia highlighted the work that Schbuart undertook during the years that he was director of the German Institute of Archaeology in Madrid, which led the Phoenician excavations at Los Toscanos, which is located between Torre del Mar and Almayate, Cerro del Mar and Casa de la Viña in Torre del Mar and Morro de Mezquitilla.
Speaking on Tuesday, Atencia said, For 30 years the German Institute of Archaeology in Madrid's excavations contracted workers from Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar, which brought prosperity and a livelihood for many families in this area.
Archaeologist and expert in prehistory, Hermanfrid Schbuart was director of the institute from 1981 until 1994.
He and his wife were visiting Torre del Mar to attend the exhibition, 'Teamwork: Antonio Valcárcel and the work and excavations of the German Institute of Archaeology in Madrid, 1964 - 1998', which is currently on at the town's old sugar cane factory, the Azucarera.
