  • The Andalusian athletics federation has said that the venue will open the door for sports tourism with world-class athletes

On Wednesday the foundation stone ceremony took place for Estepona's new athletics stadium.

The sports complex will be the only officially accredited stadium for athletics trials between Mijas and La Línea de la Concepción. It will also have support facilities, a seven-a-side football pitch and a large underground car park.

Attending the ceremony, which consisted of burying a steel cylinder, were the mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, president of the Diputación provincial authority, Elias Bendodo, and the president of the Andalusian athletics federation, José Enrique López Cuenca.

It is hoped athletics championships will be held at the stadium in the future.
