The only covered car park in Torrox Pueblo has been at the centre of complaints by residents in recent months due to its condition.
The public parking area, which opened in December 2008, has been continually vandalised and the damage has not been repaired. In addition, the planned supermarket which was to be built in the same area has never materialised and a café, which opened at the same time as the car park, closed just a few months later.
The town hall currently pays around 108,000 euros per year to rent the space and two attempts to buy it have not come to fruition. Mayor of Torrox, Óscar Medina, said this week, “The car park should never have been built there. It's a total ruin.” He went on to blame the owners for its current state.
