Marbella town hall has asked the Junta de Andalucía regional government to speed up the inclusion of the El Pinillo dunes, east of the town centre, in the protected dunes system across the municipality.
The council voted in 2016 to ask for the Junta to add the 40,000-metre area and says the delay shows the regional government's lack of interest. Councillors say that remedial and conservation work is necessary at El Pinillo but that these dunes need to be included in the master plan for the area's dunes for the work to be carried out.
Currently Marbella's formal protected dune reserve (Reserva Ecológica Dunas de Marbella) covers 220,000 square metres across different sites.
