Environmental groups have criticised Torremolinos council for not acting fast enough when the notorious red palm weevil attacks palm trees.
Following complaints from activist organisations, such as Torrenatura, the town hall has carried out pruning work on dozens of palms in public areas in an effort to prevent the weevil from spreading further.
The red palm weevil can initially go undetected, killing a palm tree by eating into its trunk if chemical treatments aren't applied regularly.
The environmentalists have also reminded the council about the need to protect the municipality's palms with preventative treatment and, where they cannot be saved, to remove dead trees quickly to prevent the weevils moving to other healthy trees. They say the council “takes weeks” to respond to a call to deal with an infected tree.
