Following reports of animal cruelty in the village of Lucena del Puerto, near Huelva, the Guardia Civil's environment protection unit, Seprona, discovered 28 abnormally thin and weak horses. It is claimed that the owner was not feeding the horses nor had they any sort of shelter or veterinary care.

The police sought a court order and a veterinary inspection was ordered, which confirmed that all of the horses were in extremely bad condition. The vets claimed that there were 12 horses with visible bones and no muscle tone.

The courts authorised the removal of the horses and the owner will now be processed for animal cruelty and for denying veterinary assistance.

The Andalusian Rescue Centre for Horses in Alhaurin El Grande (ARCH) was only able to take two since their paddocks are already filled to capacity. Ten were taken to Caballos Luna, a horse rescue centre close to Seville, but one of the weakest mares had to be put down. The authorities are still seeking refuge for the other 16 horses.
