Socialist councillors in Estepona have slammed the ruling PP group for what they say is preferential treatment for new private schools instead of state education. The local PSOE says that too many pieces of land belonging to the council have been given over to private educational establishments. The town hall has to make sure that children's education doesn't depend on the depth of the parents' pockets, they explain.

It comes as Mayfair International Academy looks to open a 350-place private school in Estepona on council land.

The ruling PP group has responded by saying that it is the PSOE-controlled regional government that is responsible for state education and that it is up to them to present their plans to the council.
