Opposition politicians in Fuengirola have criticised the council for neglect of the town's historical legacy by shutting down parts of the local museum.

The Museo de la Ciudad, near Bioparc, has just one exhibition room currently open, despite a broader collection with many more items when it first opened.

Inaugurated in February 2003, there were fourteen rooms in its 1,700 square metres. In addition there was a room dedicated to art, a cultural library and a restoration workshop. Part of the collection included local archaeological finds from the Phoenician and Roman eras. There was also a collection of items from the town covering up to the 1950s. Now the museum only features temporary exhibitions covering 500 metres.

The council says the visitor numbers were too low to keep the whole building open but hopes to set up a new archaeological display in Sohail castle.
