Road improvements to Calle La Unión are to cost nearly a million euros and are to be carried out by the local town halls, in plural.

This street runs along the boundary line between the municipalities of Mijas and Fuengirola and so residents on one side live in one town and their neighbours across the road belong to the other.

On Friday the mayor of Mijas, Juan Carlos Maldonado and his counterpart in Fuengirola, Ana Mula, signed an agreement in which the two councils promise to collaborate with one another to carry out road improvements.

"The understanding between the two councils has given rise to this joint scheme which will cost nearly a million euros and we hope to start in the first quarter of 2018," said Maldonado.

"We have come to an agreement for the good of our residents. This is the line of collaboration that we will continue in the future," he added.

"We are responding to a demand that the people have been making for some time," said Ana Mula, who added that not only would the scheme affect the surface but it would also mean new drains, sewerage pipes and other utilities. The work will take six months to complete.
