Subtropical fruit growers will see their water cut by 60%

  • Levels in La Viñuela reservoir have fallen to just 23% of its total capacity

La Axarquía is to be the first area to suffer water restrictions due to the drought situation. Levels in La Viñuela reservoir have fallen significantly, to just 23% of its total capacity with no more than 38 cubic hectometres.

After a meeting with the Junta de Andalucía on Thursday the local water system committee agreed to reduce the use of water for irrigation by 60%.

This leaves the growers east of Malaga with only 10 cubic hectometres at their disposal during the current water year, compared to the 23 cubic hectometres in the 2016-2017 season.
