The iconic bridge over the gorge in Ronda, known as the Puente Nuevo, will be closed to traffic for the next five weeks while repairs are carried out.
The 230-year-old structure is leaking due to problems with drains, sewerage and piping. White stains have appeared on the stone, water is coming out of one side and visitors have noticed smells.
Pedestrians can still cross the bridge during the work. The bridge sees 11,000 vehicles daily and the closure is also acting as a trial run, as the council is thinking of long-term measures to reduce traffic on it.
