The town hall in Estepona has been recognised by a European Union group for best practice in encouraging the participation of foreign residents in the daily life and politics of the municipality.

The Spanish charity 'Movimentos por la Paz' (Movements for Peace), that coordinates the issue on behalf of the EU in Spain, invited the town's foreign residents' department to give a speech in Madrid to delegates from local authorities and associations from Spain, Italy and Austria and to explain its work to integrate expats.

Around a quarter of the population of Estepona is made up of foreign residents and, the town hall says, people of 101 nationalities are resident in the area. The British are the biggest group, followed by Moroccans, Romanians and Italians.
