Plan to fine beggars using pets approved in Nerja

  • Councillor Marí Carmen López said that the animal ruling was important in terms of "hygiene and safety"

Nerja town hall voted unanimously last week to pass a draft proposal which, if it comes into force, will seek to eradicate the use of animals by beggars in the town centre by issuing fines for anyone caught begging with their pets.

Mayor Rosa Arrabal said that the local authority would now work closely with animal protection organisations as well as police and technical staff to work through the proposal.

While begging isn't illegal in Spain, councillor Marí Carmen López said that the animal ruling was important in terms of “hygiene and safety”.
