The provincial delegate for the economy from the Junta de Andalucía has reassured Casares town hall that putting the Sierra de la Utrera out to tender for mining activity is a necessary step in order to proceed with the area's petition for protected status.

Mariano Ruiz Arujo said, according to town hall sources, that he expected no company to come forward with a proposal, and that if one did, it would be rejected by the Cultural department because of the ongoing process to have the area declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC).

Despite these reassurances, Casares mayor, José Carrasco, was skeptical and said that the town hall would remain vigilant.

The Sierra de la Utrera is very similar to El Torcal in Antequera, with its landscape shaped by the movement of water, offering undoubted scenic value. What's more, there are a number of significant archaeological finds located in the area.
