Plans have now been drawn up for a new road to link the east and west sides of Las Lagunas, in Mijas Costa, and the council has agreed to reserve funds from next year's budget to pay for the works. The road will run east to west between the Avenida de Mijas and the Camino de Coín, and there will be a roundabout on the old Coín road, by Venta La Morena. This should have been done years ago, said the mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, this week. It is a project which is based on common sense, because it will make the area safer for local people. So far this year there have been 14 accidents on the A-7053 in Mijas, in which one person died and 13 people were injured, one of them seriously.

The works will be carried out in phases, and the first phase will cost about 2.7 million euros and take six months to complete. The council is taking the opportunity to lay new pipes at the same time, to reduce flooding in the area.
