Workers at Vélez-Málaga's cemetery uncovered what was initially believed to be a hand grenade dating from Spain's Civil War on Tuesday.
The councillor responsible for the area, Juan Carlos Ruiz, and the mayor's office were immediately informed of the discovery.
Local Police were the first to arrive at the scene before officers from the National Police force took over along with TEDAX; Spain's bomb disposal unit.
An inspection of the device led experts to believe that it was a homemade grenade, possibly linked to the Guardia Civil, who during the war and Franco regime, supported the dictator and the Nationalists.
The device is thought not to pose any risk to safety and has been sent to Malaga for further analysis and to determine when it would have been made.
Although evacuation of the area was not necessary, a temporary perimeter fence was installed during the operation.
