Thousands unfurl giant Spanish flag in Fuengirola

The event on Thursday coincided with the Feria del Rosario making it a festive occasion

Fuengirola town hall unfurled a giant Spanish flag on the fairground on Thursday to mark the Día de Hispanidad or Spain's national day.

The flag measured 50 metres in length and, according to municipal sources, is the longest in the world of its kind. It was held up by almost 1,000 people, and observed by several thousand more who had gathered on the fairground to enjoy the Rosario fair.

The mayor, Ana Mula, said that the unfurling of the flag had been a fantastic display of the love we feel for Spain, for our mother country, she said.

Today, Fuengirola has demonstrated once more that Spain is unique and we are all united. Also that we support our State security forces, she added.

Mula recalled the demonstration last Sunday when around six thousand people joined together in Fuengirola to call for the unity of Spain in the face of the Catalan independence drive. Sunday's rally, she said, was also to show support for the National Police and Guardia Civil.

The flag had been created especially for the occasion, due to its unusual measurements: 50 metres long by five wide, covering a total of 250 square metres.
