Owners of illegally-built properties in the Mijas countryside could be feeling a little more optimistic this week, as councillor Andrés Ruiz held a meeting with regional government representatives to discuss their situation with regard to the Junta's new land organisation plan (POT). This is important, because Mijas will be directly affected by the plan, said the councillor.
About 3,000 properties in the municipality have been built on land which was not zoned for construction. We want to find a definitive solution for these families. We have explained to the Junta that there are various ways the properties can be made legal, either by giving official recognition to a particular outlying area, or as small communities or even individual buildings, as stipulated in the decree of 2012, but where the land is protected we can't put it into effect, he explained. We pointed out that Mijas is a special case, and that the new POT needs to make allowances for that.
