  • The MA-23 access to the airport was closed to traffic until Sunday evening after structural damage was ruled out

The fire which broke out at the paper recycling plant, Recisur, in Villa Rosa industrial estate, was started from a spark produced by a forklift.

Several sections of the MA-23 airport access road were closed to traffic because of the smoke but everything was reopened on Sunday evening after it was confirmed that the flames had not damaged the structure of its bridge.

Although there were no casualties in the fire, many are shocked that the industrial plant has been allowed to keep their permit. This is the third fire that Recisur has experienced in four years. The plant is right next to Bodegas Quitapenas, a winery, which will have inevitable alcohol spillage around the building which could caused an extremely serious fire.

Fortunately, firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before they spread to any of the surrounding businesses.
