Work started on Monday to restore Torre del Mar's second oldest lighthouse, which is situated next to the iconic blue and white one on the towns promenade.

The restoration work, which is expected to take around three months, will include moving some of the palm and pine trees that currently impede the view of the lighthouse, which was built in 1969.

Other plans include cleaning and painting the stone and cement structure, as well as updating its motor and handrail as well as installing new lighting both inside and out.

Torre del Mars oldest lighthouse, which is located half way up Avenida Toré Toré, underwent similar reforms earlier this year and has become one of the towns main tourist attractions, according to deputy mayor, Jesús Pérez Atencia.

Restoring the lighthouses forms part of Vélez-Málagas EDUSI2016 project, which aims to promote the areas heritage and culture in order to attract more visitors. This is being made possible through 10 million euros of European Union regional development funds (ERDF).
