An 82-year-old British tourist named Brian Hayes has been found disoriented and dehydrated on the hard shoulder of the dual carriageway near Nerja. Hayes, who was visiting the area from Manchester, went missing after he left a rented apartment in the Capistrano residential area in Nerja to put his rubbish out on Saturday and did not return.
More than 30 hours later the Guardia Civil located the man after a van driver spotted him at kilometre 295 of the Autovía del Mediterráneo, just before the exit for Maro and the Nerja Cave. It is thought that Hayes had suffered a fall that had immobilised him and left him stuck in the same place. He was eventually taken by ambulance to Hospital Comarca in Vélez-Malaga for a check-up.
Hayes' daughter, Amanda Wilkins, who had been on holiday in Nerja with her father and their family for a fifth consecutive year, has thanked neighbours friends and the Guardia Civil, who put out a warning in Nerja, for helping to find her father. Wilkins explained that her father is not ill and only suffers the usual ailments that come with age.
