Almost 40 people, including Junta de Andalucía members, Nerja mayor, Rosa Arrabal, and former mayor, José Alberto Armijo, as well as other councillors and 26 companies are being investigated by Malaga’s environment public prosecutor and the Guardia Civil for their involvement in an illegal rubbish tip in Nerja.
The tip, which has been used for 15 years, is in the Río de la Miel area and near to the Río Chillar, which are located in the Sierra de Tejera, Almijara y Alhama natural park.
The whole area is protected and is home to native plant species, some of which are in danger of extinction.
According to sources, a fire, which could easily break out, particularly during the summer, would have “catastrophic” environmental consequences.
The investigation is being led by court in Torrox and is due to finish soon.
