The town hall in Malaga has gained permission from the regional government to spray larvicide on the embankment that separates the Guadalmar district from the Guadalhorce river to try to finally put an end to the mosquito problem that has beset residents in the Guadalhorce estuary area of the city for the last year and a half.

Diggers have been working since the early hours of the morning to clear overgrown weeds that could serve as shelter for the insects, before digging five to ten centimetres into the ground to ensure they do not grow back in a short space of time.

Additionally, rosemary and lavender are being used as mosquito repelents in the area due to their aromatic smell.

A small number of pest control workers will also be sent on a small boat to spray the edges of all the ponds and inland islets with the insecticide, once the forecast rain has passed.

The regional government, that controls the land, has described the problem as a municipal matter and will therefore not be putting any money towards eradicating the plagues of mosquitoes in the area. Nevetheless, the Junta de Andalucía has given the town hall the go ahead to adopt the measures that it deems necessary.
